Do I Need a Graphic Designer, Or Can I Just Use Canva?
It's a fair question, and the honest answer is: it depends. Canva is genuinely brilliant.
It's made design accessible to small business owners who would otherwise have no tools at all, and for certain things, it does a great job. We use it ourselves for some tasks. So this isn't an argument against Canva, it's more about helping you understand what it's good for and where it starts to fall short.
The question isn't really 'Canva or designer?' It's more about where your business is at and what your brand actually needs to do.
If you need to create social media posts, internal documents, simple event flyers, or presentations, canva is a great tool. It's fast, affordable, and the templates are decent enough for many everyday uses.
If you're in the early stages of your business, still testing your offer, or working with a very limited budget, starting with Canva is a sensible approach. Done-is-better-than-perfect when you're just getting started.
The challenge with Canva is that you're working within someone else's design system. Your logo might be built on a template that thousands of other businesses are also using. Your colours might look right but not have been chosen with any strategy behind them. And without a strong underlying brand system, Canva content can start to look inconsistent, a slightly different font here, a different tone there, which quietly erodes trust.
A graphic designer, especially one who works alongside brand strategy, creates something that's genuinely yours. A visual identity that's built around who you are, who you're for, and what you want people to feel when they encounter your business.
The question to ask yourself is this… Are you happy for your brand to look similar to other businesses using the same Canva templates? Or is differentiation important to you? If you're in a competitive space, trying to attract premium clients, or at a stage where your brand needs to do more heavy lifting, investing in professional design usually pays for itself.
Good design isn't just about looking nice. It's about creating a consistent, credible, and recognisable presence that builds trust before you've even had a conversation.
